From what I've read in my friends' journals so far, most people had a great Christmas, if not - like me - the greatest Christmas ever. (Of course, I am writing "Christmas" just because I am lazy. Insert a winter holiday of your choice.) That is so wonderful. Christmas tends to be more stressfull than anything else, and often so expensive! This year was simply cool. Of course, I still haven't found out how much it'll cost to get my car running again. But I've decided to let that worry me next year. I can't do anything right now anyway, so why should I spend my time pondering something I don't know any facts about and can't change anything about. Yuck, my English sucks today.

I had a long lasting Bowie moment this afternoon. I watched the DVDs. I now finally know where many of [livejournal.com profile] agrathea's icons come from. I smiled a lot. I sang along. I am so glad that Labyrinth and its fandom led me to David Bowie. He's the first musician I was interested in for a longer time, and the first person who doesn't repeat himself all the time, which usually makes me get bored with many singers.
So, the Bowie moment started this afternoon and is still going on. Over four hours of watching the DVDs, all through dinner, and that was one hour ago. I know what I am going to dream tonight.

On the 31st I am going to watch a lot of music. 3Sat, a German TV station, will broadcast concerts of all sorts of musicians. There's even Robbie Williams. I like him. One of the "I'm in there for the money" people, but at least he's honest about it.

I still need to write the entry telling you why [livejournal.com profile] rev_tobias rocks. But I haven't seen him around for a while, so I guess he'll accept my apologies for the delay.

I don't have anything else to say. But did that ever stop me from posting?

Edit: I got another Christmas card today. From Australia. The American mail seems to be lost over the ocean. *sigh*

Aww - I was afraid of that. When they showed on the news about all the delays in mail service due to the weather, I was afraid my card would be late. Well, it should be there soon! (I hope!)

That DVD sure makes me happy, too. *sigh*

Especially the part in "Time Will Crawl" when he scratches his nose. And the part in "Jump They Say" when his eyes shoot open after the jump. *drool*

Have you yet noticed his trademark smearing of the lipstick with the back of his hand? I wonder if he got that in his mime days. He sometimes even does it when he's not wearing makeup at all. It's so funny his little repeated mannerisms.

Oh, don't feel bad about it! It's nothing you could influence. (Unless you have secret powers I don't know of.)
And Christmas time is until January 6th, at least.
I don't mind having the Christmas spirit alive until summer, anyway. :-)

No, no secret powers. Which is really a shame. That would be very cool, I think. ;)

Well, it should be there at some point. But I agree with you about the Christmas spirit. I wish there was some way to prolong it until the summer. It does seem to fade away, and that's a shame.

Yes, I've noticed that. Especially with the lipstick.
And also how he kind of makes fun of himself, like in "Blue Jean".
And I've discussed to no end with my sister about the color of his eyes. The biography I have says that one is is just a little off color due to the fight that damaged the pupil, but he must wear colored contacts from time to time. I guess he loves to keep people guessing.

I really enjoyed the songs from the 70s, especially the ones he recorded in 1972. I dunno, it looked so much like a young guy who just enjoys playing and singing, and just wearing the "scandalous" clothes to please others, as if they got nothing to do with him.
Am I making sense here? Probably not.

And the clip to "The Heart's Filthy Lessons" is so cool! The rest fo my family was rather disgusted and "What's that supposed to be", but I liked it.

Okay, I'll stop now.
That's what you get for encouraging a new fan to talk about Bowie.

I suppose it is ecause people get so caught up in work and everyday stuff, and tend to think that Christmas is just something for a winter holiday and impossible to really make part of your life.
I am sure that it is possible though, and every year I try to keep the joy and fun of Christmas throughout the rest of the year. More or less successfully...

Maybe, but it sucks like a native speaker's! (=

Yes, he does have a good sense of humor about himself. I am inclined to agree that either video directors get him to wear contacts, or editors enhance the colors in post-production.

I think Bowie always got a kick out of being a little scandalous. But you are correct, he did it more in his youth to get an effect and not as much because it was a part of his nature being expressed. Btw, did you know about the easter eggs? There's a few secret videos on the disc.

I actually loved all the videos around "The Heart's Filthy Lesson" time period. He worked a lot with Trent Reznor, and I really like that edgy grunginess. It is very much a style I relate to.

You don't ever have to stop ranting where I am concerned. I could go on for hours myself.

When clicking through the credits, I saw the easter eggs mentioned. Just playing the discs, they didn't show up. But I didn't check the track list yet, maybe they are listed there.

I think he loves to confuse people. You can never say you've figured out his style, because it changes a lot over time. I think each album has its distinct sound, though.

When first hearing 1. Outside I didn't like it at all. But getting into it more I found I liked many songs. "I have not been to Oxford town" stuck inmy mind for ages.

There are so many songs I haven't even heard yet, I am discoveringhim bit by bit. That is so much fun.

They're not listed. You have to do some special tricks to get them to play. There's a list somewhere online... Ah, here's one:

Most people don't like it. It's funny, though, I liked it right away. It's a murder mystery. And the grungy sound appeals to me. I spent a good part of a year trying to solve the mystery, learning about all the characters through the lyrics and the character journal entries that were sort of in the liner notes, but also posted online on his website when the album debuted. I wasn't the only one... There were tons of Bowie fans chatting back and forth about "who killed Baby Grace Blue?" I was fascinated especially with the character Ramona A. Stone, who was a female android created to be a "pleasure droid" but ended up leading an anarchist cult of homicide artists who worshipped The Minotaur. The detective, Nathan Adler, had fallen in love with Ramona at one time, but knew of her devious dealings now. Another artist by the name of Leon wasn't quite into homicide art, but he did do performance art that involved cutting himself. He was blamed for the killing of Baby Grace Blue, a 14 year old girl. However, it was suspected also that Baby Grace Blue got caught up with Ramona's cult somehow, and Ramona held her captive and did "artistic experiments" on her, ending in her death. Ramona in my opinion probably acted as the Minotaur, wearing a mask and donning the androgynous personality while doing her killings.

All of this and much more in the one album! Very interesting, huh? Knowing some of this, the music videos probably make even more sense.

You'll actually find that most of Bowie's albums have some sort of running storyline, though not always as obvious as 1. Outside. Outside was supposed to be a part of a trilogy, with the mystery further followed through 2. Contamination and something else that Bowie never named because he is bad about finishing those sorts of endeavors because he gets bored so easily.

Thanks for the link, I'll try that. But they are hidden really well.

I figured there must have been more parts planned once I realized that the title really was "1. Outside" and not just "Outside".
But three albums continueing one story would be hard to do. He seems more the type of person who likes to try new things, not keep working on something already done.

I'd always thought it was Ramona who had killed Baby Grace. Those journal entries really give me the creeps, though. Especially Baby Grace. Ramona I find rather interesting myself. Thanks for the background info, must listen to it again and try to get some more of the lyrics. (Yes, I could look it up, but I prefer to find out myself.)
