I just heard on the radio that the German government is thinking of reducing the number of holidays. Bad economic situation and stuff.
The holiday they want to get rid of is our National Holiday!!!
I don'T believe it! I don't think they'll get through with it anyway, but that a German government is actually thinking about it is bad enough.
Just imagine the Americans getting rid of Fourth of July, or the French of - what it is, June 4th, I think.
Why not get rid of a Christian holiday instead? Most people don't go to church anyway.

I think it's Bastille Day - July 14th.

Thanks. I knew it was June or July, and that it was some day with a four in it.

Ah, but the German National Holiday is the day of Unification. And with the way the Kohl government has fucked up that process, the economic decline following it and the growing resentment in both East and West, the rationale is probably that people don't want to be reminded of Unification anyway :-/

Actually, without unification, the economic decline would have started even earlier in West Germany. We were quite eager to buy a ton of stuff in the nineties we couldn't get before, that was really good.
And actually, AFAIK Kohl wanted the unification to get done much slower, to give more time to adjust the economic, political and social systems to the new situation. But the pressure from the people was too high. Look at the pictures of the people camping in the gardens of the West German embassy in Hungaria, those people would not have waited any longer. Neither the people on the demonstrations in the cities.

Chalk it up to self-loathing maybe?
