Sep. 21st, 2004 09:36 pmWe got pretty much blown away walking the dogs. It was really, really windy, and the road we use when walking with that friend is up on a hill. Umbra didn't mind, though. In case I didn't say before, Umbra is the name of our dog. She's a Hovawart.
Anyway, then we went to the hardware store and got some paint. I was right with what I thought yesterday, which made me feel less stupid about hardware stores in general and paint in particular. The color we got is called Salmon, but it looks less pinkish, at least on the outside of the can, than Salmon usually does. More like rosewood, but rather light.
Then I sanded the thing (I still don't know how to call it, I wouldn't even know in German) - by hand. It has this box to put the ink in, and holes to put pencils, and the stand for the pen and other notches for small stuff and the drawers, it wouldn't have worked with any sort of machine we have.
Took longer than I think the painting is going to take. I'm going to do that tomorrow.
Before dinner, my Dad showed me the printouts of the translation I did. I found spelling and translation mistakes on 8 out of 17 pages, and felt terrible. Until after dinner I proofread the German version and found almost as many mistakes there. Now if these guys are so bad about German, I don't need to feel bad about my English. Especially as my knowledge of agriculture, rural development and civil engineering is rather limited.
I googled for some information on how much a translator gets per page, and found one place that says 7 Euros. I also found a page where translators for literature complained that they were offered a little over 16€, whereas translators at courts get at least 30€. But I can understand. You can't really work 9 to 5 translating, I felt absolutely brain dead that one day when I translated 8 pages. Either way, it's going to be nice to get that money. Even though I think I'm going to have them transfer it to my Mom's account right away, paying internet time. Even though, 7 € for 17 pages would mean over 100 €. I have already paid 50 this month for internet. So probably keep part of it and reward myself with something nice. I've avoided clothes stores lately, because they had so many things I liked for prices I didn't like.
We'll see.
