A while ago, I had to learn the hard way that this little symbol: * is really called asterisk.
For some reason, probably because of my early infatuation with Asterix, I always assumed it couldn't possibly be spelled "sk" in the end.

However, I refuse to believe that the phrase "without further adieu" is correct. It simply cannot be "adieu". And even if everybody would spell it thus, I'd still maintain that it is "ado" and will always be.

I think "adieu" is French, meaning to say goodbyes and ado is old English, meaning bustle, a rapid active commotion.

That's the way I see it. But the phrase "without further adieu" is around so much on the internet it makes me want to spork my eyes out!

Maybe it's because we pay closer attention, but often I get the feeling that second-language speakers get more upset about mistakes like that than native speakers.
