"Tired" seems to become my default mode.
We just came back from the exhibit in Torgau. It was about the history of the Saxon electors and their ties to religion. The whole thing was named "Glaube und Macht" (Belief/Religion and Power - sorry about the bad translation, but I don't feel like thinking about vocabulary right now.) It was really interesting, and I found out that there are some historical incidents I don't know anything about. Of course, I knew that the differences between Catholics and Protestants also influenced politics, or that dukes, electors, kings and whatnot used religion as a means to decide political discussions, but how far that went even before the war 1618 to 1648, I didn't know. Maybe I have learned it back in school and forgot about it.
Also, it was interesting to see how large the "empire" of the Saxon royal family was. That's particularly interesting, as the "Wettiner", as they are called, come - who would have guessed - from Wettin, a town a few kilometers north of where I live. Which makes it likely that yours truly has some remote connections to the family. In this area (and pretty much all over Germany, if not Europe), everybody intermarried sooner or later. *g* Yeah, the connection is about as close as the one between the Wettiner and Alexander the Great, a relation they claim for some reason I can't understand. It's not that Alexander really traveled in this area. If the region was populated at all in his times, it would have been some barbaric slavs, and not anybody Alexander was interested in. Back then, they didn't even know about the silver in the mountains in Saxony, so it was a rather worthless area anyway.
So, the exhibit was interesting and educating. A rather large negative though: way too many loud tourguides. Sometimes you'd have three guides in one room, all explaining different things to their groups. So for one, a regular, "guide-less" visitor had a hard time getting to see things and second, it was a constant loud noise bothering me quite a bit. At least they weren't as stupid as the guide in Berlin.
Just sticking to one group and following a tour was no real option, either, as the guides only picked out some items and left most unexplained, not giving the time to look at them on your own either. And the guides didn't say much more than was explained on the signs and in the catalog, which was lying around for people to check it out, so you didn't even have to buy it.
I definitely need to get some sleep soon. But it won't be now, I can't sleep well during the day. Oh well, if it doesn't kill us it makes us harder.
