May. 6th, 2007 06:39 am1. Why did you decide to become a librarian?
Basically, I decided what I didn't want to do. I didn't want to study languages because I couldn't see myself finding a job in a field that is as overrun. I couldn't imagine being a teacher. I wouldn't even get through the first few semesters of any natural science or math.
I did want to do something that was in any way connected to books. The choice was, in the career information centre I went to, limited to becoming a librarian or an editor. Judging from the stuff that is printed and on the bestseller lists, I didn't think any publisher would like to have me as an editor, because I'd make sure none of it ever got near a printing press.
That left librarianship.
I wasn't sure I'd made the right decision until I worked in Bangor, though.
2. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
There are so many places I want to go! In one of my favorite children's books, the two main characters travel by car and horse from Peking to Ulan Bator, I'd love to do that. I'd love to travel the Silk Road. I'd love to see as much of Ancient Greece as possible, I'd love to see where Schliemann dug up Troy and where the Pergamon Altar was found. I'd love to see the pyramids. I'd love to see the Taj Mahal and Petra.
I'd love to go to the Ngorongoro Crater and to the National Parks in Africa, and to South Africa and travel along the Garden Route.
I'd love to see New York and Chicago and Los Angeles and Las Vegas and Hongkong and hundreds of other places.
But if I had to decide on one place to go right now, it's probably be Scotland, as I plan for my vacation. Just because I'd really love a vacation right now and I know I won't be able to see everything I want to see in the two weeks I have in August.
3. Is SS/HG your favorite HP pairing? If so why?
Hermione is easily my favourite female in the HP universe, and for a long time this was the only pairing I could imagine myself writing, even though I do read just about any pairing that sounds believable (even slash, though I don't like my main characters involved in it, takes the fun out of my het pairings if Severus is snogging Remus).
But now, I find I like Lucius just as much as Severus, and I pair him up a lot with Hermione lately.
Hermione with anybody of her own age just doesn't seem very likely to me, as she is in many ways older, more determined than them. She'd scare Ron of in no time, frankly, even though JKR doesn't seem to agree so far (I have hopes for DH, though).
And Lucius and Severus, due to their positions within the Death Eaters but on the brink of "maybe they're not really evil" make for wonderful characters, full of twists and turns, you never know what they might do next.
4. What got you interested in writing fanfiction?
I started reading fanfiction of the Labyrinth universe and liked the idea to continue a story, much as I did anyway, but only in my mind. So I started dabbling in there and through people on LJ drifted into the HP fandom.
5. Do you want to try your hand at writing original fiction?
*blushes*
Well, I wrote my first piece of more or less original fiction years before my first fanfic. I'd decided there were not nearly enough strong female characters in fairy tales and set out to rectify the matter. They're horrible Mary Sues, most of them, but I might at some point get back to some of the ideas I had and rewrite the stories.
But it's just for fun. I couldn't imagine writing anything that'd be good enough to make it to publication, and I admire people who do manage that.
