If you rented a car with an automatic transmission (though I imagine that's rather hard to do in Europe) you wouldn't have to worry about accidentaly trying to start out in 5th gear :-)
I'm glad you got your key. If it makes you feel better I once lost my glasses. I looked all over and couldn't find them. Eventually I was getting hungry so I looked in the freezer for something to eat, and there sitting atop frozen foods were my glasses. I'm still not sure how they got there, but I must have taken them off to rub my eyes or something when I last looked in the freezer, and rested them in there.
I've also lost my coffee mug at work a few times. Since I'm tall I tend to put it on high up places, like the tops of the book stacks if I'm returning t my office and I get distracted with something. I just have to look all over for my mug, because nobody else in the building is tall enough to see the places I tend to put it.
