It is a good day
Jul. 29th, 2005 06:14 pmWork was busy and I finished only 1985 instead of getting all they way up to 1990 as I had planned to last week.
But it's okay. When I come back in mid-August it will be quiet at work and I'll get the rest done easily.
The drive home was hellish with tempreatures outside up in the high thirties (Celsius), and as my car is not air conditioned and you can't really keep the widows open if you're doing 130 kilometers an hour, it was sweltering hot in the car.
As I am still tired and exhausted from yesterday, it was har to concentrate and drive with the attention necessary of a Friday afternoon in holiday season. (Bavaria started holidays today, 4 or os provinces started two weeks ago, meaning just bout everybody is on the road. Add to that a few stray Danish campers (the majority of them went north two weeks ago) and the Dutch cars and mobile homes - Dutch people seem to travel with all their possession with them - and you have a nice idea of what's going on on the roads. There were several moments when I was thankful I don't like to drive up to the car ahead of me as if I tried to get into their trunk, gives a few extra metres when you need to brake suddenly.
Anyway, I made it home and it's cooling off. Maybe we'll have a bit of a thunderstorm later.
The bike tour yesterday was nice. I went back from the lake with one of the guys, as we were both too tired to sit and wait for the two other people who would go up to the base. Most stayed down in the town, or even had their families come and pick them up from the place where we ate and the captain showed off water-skiing.
The hill up t the base was hell to go up by bike. I'm surprised I maanged. Christoph kept pushing me along verbally, telling me that I'd be able to make it. But I think he was still surprised I didn't decide to walk part of the way or at least took a break. So, apparently, has ben just about everybody else who heard that I did it. Tehee.
Speaking of surprised, my predecessor spoke to the captain a few days ago asking him whether he knew I ha been working last weekend. I had mentioned it, but of course the captain had forgotten. So he called me and was clearly feeling bad, both because he thought he had pushed me so much that I decided I had to work the weekend, and because I might now demand some etra free time.
Well, I said what I had told him before. If I need an extra day or half-day off, I don't want any discussions about whether I have the extra hours to do so. It seemed he was fine with that, though still not happy. Oh well, tough luck.
Anyway, I have met Titus. He's aout the coolest cat I know. He's got these tiger stripes, but is more brownish than grey. His face is ery triangular and he is a bit bowlegged, making him look like a real miniature wildcat or some sort of tiger. He also likes biting fingers and he yells at ou if you don't pay enough attention to him. Umbra tolerates him, but he's wary of the big black dog.
He also seems comfortable with everybody in the family, even my dad, who, despit always claiming he doesn't like animals in the house, enjoys calling Titus to him whenever he gets a chance.
Mom got me some money. It was cheaper at our bank than at the bank on the airport. Also, the prices for the British pound apparently are increasing very. very fast. For the 200 pounds she got me, she paid 30 Euros more than I had calculated this morning.
So it's extra good news that I got my tax calculation for 2004. And they paid back pretty much everything they had withdrawn from my income in the first place. Tehee. Good thing, too, I can use the money. And there's going to be an extra bit of pocket money in store with the new elections coming up this fall, as I'll be volunteering for that. I can't be the one responsible for filling out the forms and everything, as I have to leave around six on that Sunday to drive down again, but I will be able to hand out ballots in the morning or check voters' names on the list.
( cut for politial rambling )
Anyway, I'm tired but in a good mood. I'm really looking forward to my vacation now. Still nervous, though, but it's better than a few days ago.
It's rumbling ominously outside, I better get this posted before we have a full-fledged thunderstorm.
But one more reason why it's a good day, posted by
mrwitch here. I might yet see him live again. (No, not Mr Witch. David Bowie!)
